How detailers show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI answers

By Steve Meitler · 2026-07-31 · 5 min read

What ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI actually read when somebody asks for a detailer nearby, and the changes that make your shop the one they name.

"Find me a good ceramic coating installer in Boise" is now a question people type into ChatGPT and Perplexity rather than Google. The answer comes back as three or four named businesses with a sentence about each. There is no page two and there is no ad slot. You are either in the answer or you do not exist for that customer.

This is winnable in detailing specifically, because almost nobody in the trade has done the work. 34.3% of shops have no website at all, which means no text for an AI to read.

What the answer engines are actually reading

They are not reading your Instagram. Across ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, the sources that get cited for a local service query are consistently:

  • Your Google Business Profile, especially categories, services, hours and review text
  • Your own website, if the pages state plainly what you do, where, and roughly what it costs
  • Directories and local listings where your name, address and phone match exactly
  • Local news, chamber pages, forum threads and Reddit posts that mention you
  • Review content, which is quoted directly more often than owners expect

Two rules follow from this. Everything must be written in plain sentences a machine can lift, and every mention of your business across the internet must say the same name, address and phone.

Fix the name, address and phone first

An AI engine deciding whether "Apex Auto Spa" and "Apex Detailing LLC" are the same business will often decide they are not, and split your authority in half. Pick one exact business name, one address format, one phone number, and make them identical on your Google profile, your website footer, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Facebook and every directory you are in.

Mobile detailers should still claim Apple Maps and Bing Places. They are small compared with Google and they are read by AI systems, and almost no detailer bothers.

Write the pages an AI can quote

The single highest-value page you can build is a plain-language service and pricing page. Not a gallery. Text.

Write short, factual paragraphs that answer the exact questions being asked:

"We install ceramic coatings in Meridian and Boise. A one-year coating on a sedan starts at $650. A five-year coating with a two-stage paint correction on an SUV runs $1,300 to $1,900. Installation takes two days and the vehicle stays with us overnight."

That paragraph can be quoted whole. Compare it to what most detail sites say, which is "premium protection for your investment," a sentence that means nothing and gets cited never.

Then build one page per service and one page per city you genuinely serve. Coating, paint correction, interior detail, fleet washing, mobile detailing in each town. Real content on each, 400 words minimum, not the same page with the city swapped.

Answer the questions people actually ask

AI engines favor pages structured as questions with direct answers. Put a FAQ section on your service pages using the phrasing customers use:

  • How much does a ceramic coating cost?
  • How long does ceramic coating last on a daily driver?
  • Is paint correction necessary before coating?
  • Do you come to my house or do I bring the car in?
  • How long does a full detail take?
  • Can you get dog hair out of cloth seats?

Answer in two to four sentences, with a number where possible. Add FAQPage structured data if you or your developer can. Structured data is not required for AI citation, but it makes the question and answer pairing unambiguous.

Get mentioned somewhere other than your own site

Entity confidence comes from third-party corroboration. A shop mentioned in four independent places is described confidently. A shop mentioned nowhere gets skipped even if its own site is excellent.

Realistic sources for a detailer:

  • Chamber of commerce and local business association listings
  • The local subreddit, where "best detailer in [city]" threads are cited constantly by AI engines. Do not astroturf. Answer detailing questions honestly with your business name attached and let customers name you.
  • Car clubs, Cars and Coffee groups, track day organizers, local enthusiast Facebook groups
  • Partnerships with used car dealers, body shops and tint shops that link to you
  • Local news or a neighborhood publication doing a small business feature

Let the crawlers in

Check that your site is not blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt. The relevant user agents are GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Some site builders block them by default, and some hosting providers block them at the firewall. If you want to be cited, allow them.

Also make sure your key pages are server-rendered rather than assembled by JavaScript after load. Some AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so a booking page built entirely in a client-side app can be invisible.

Reviews are training data now

Review text gets quoted directly in AI answers, which changes what you should be asking for. A review saying "Great job, super friendly" adds nothing an engine can use. A review saying "They ceramic coated my new 4Runner in Nampa and it took two days" contains the service, the vehicle type and the town.

Ask customers to name the work and the town. It is one extra sentence at handover and it is covered in the reviews guide.

How to check if it is working

Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the same five questions a customer would: best car detailing in [your city], ceramic coating near [your city], mobile detailing [your city], who does paint correction in [your city], how much does detailing cost in [your city]. Write down which businesses get named. If it is not you, look at who is named and what their site says that yours does not. That is usually a pricing page.

Frequently asked

Does this hurt my normal Google rankings? No. Everything here, clear service pages, consistent listings, real reviews, is what standard local SEO asks for anyway. The AI engines just punish vagueness harder.

How long does it take? Listing consistency shows up in weeks. New pages usually need 60 to 90 days to be crawled, indexed and picked up as a source.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers? Not today for local business results. It is earned through citations and clarity, which is why doing it now is worth more than it will be in two years.
