Google Business Profile setup for detailers, mobile and fixed
Categories, service areas, the services list, photo cadence, posts and Q and A, set up correctly for a mobile detailer or a fixed shop that wants the map pack.
Your Google Business Profile is the storefront for a business most customers will never walk into before booking. It is also where the two halves of this trade diverge hardest. A mobile detailer and a three-bay shop need the same profile filled out in two different ways, and getting that wrong is why a lot of good detailers are invisible three miles from their own driveway.
Across 73,083 listings, 36% have no hours set and 34.3% have no website linked. The bar for a complete profile is not high.
Mobile or fixed: pick the right listing type
A fixed shop lists a street address. The pin shows on the map, you are eligible for the map pack near that address, and your ranking drops off with distance from it.
A mobile detailer should be a service-area business. You enter your address for verification, then hide it, and define the areas you serve by city or zip. Google will not show a pin. That has two consequences most mobile operators do not plan for. First, you rank around your registered address, so if you live 25 minutes outside the metro you are competing for the wrong suburbs. Second, with no pin and no drive-by, reviews and website content carry a larger share of your ranking weight.
If you run mobile out of a home in a far suburb but work a downtown core, that is the single biggest structural problem in your marketing, and the honest fixes are a small commercial mailbox address that meets Google's rules, or paid search targeted at the areas you want. Do not fake an address. Suspensions in this category are common and appeals take weeks.
Do not list both a service area and a public address unless customers genuinely come to you. Google treats that as two different business models and hybrid listings often get flagged.
Categories
Primary category is the strongest single lever in local ranking. Choose based on what you want to sell, not what you also do:
- Sell details and coatings: Car detailing service. This is the largest category in the dataset by a wide margin.
- Run a wash with an attendant: Car wash.
- Run bays customers operate: Self service car wash.
Then add secondary categories that match real services you offer, such as window tinting service, auto restoration service, or pressure washing service if you also do driveways. Do not stack ten categories. Each one you add dilutes the primary signal and invites the wrong searches. Three to five total is right.
The services list is not decoration
Under Services, add every job you sell as its own entry with a description of 100 to 300 characters and a starting price where you can stand behind it. Entries that work:
- Ceramic coating, one to five year, from $650
- Multi-stage paint correction, from $450
- Full interior detail, from $199
- Maintenance wash, from $45
- Headlight restoration, $89
- Engine bay cleaning, $75
- Pet hair removal, from $60
- New car protection package, from $900
Two reasons this matters. Google uses these terms to match your listing to searches beyond your category, and the AI answer engines read them directly when someone asks for a detailer who does coatings. A profile with one service entry called "Detailing" gives them nothing to work with.
Photos, and why the ones you are posting are wrong
96.4% of listings have at least one photo, so photos alone do not distinguish you. What they contain does.
Most detailers upload finished-car glamour shots taken at golden hour. Customers already assume you can make a clean car look clean. What sells is the transformation and the proof of process:
- Before and after pairs, same angle, same lighting. Dirty driver seat, then clean driver seat.
- Paint under inspection light showing swirls, then the same panel corrected.
- Your van, your bay, your equipment, so a buyer knows you are real.
- Your face and your crew. Detailing is a trust purchase where a stranger takes your keys.
Upload five to ten photos a month, not fifty once. Steady cadence looks like an active business. Name the files something descriptive before uploading and shoot in landscape for the profile, even if the same content goes vertical for Reels.
Posts, Q and A, and hours
Post weekly. Sixty to a hundred words plus one image, on a real subject: a coating that went out that week, a seasonal offer, a note that you are booking three weeks out. Posts do little for ranking directly, but a profile with a post from four days ago converts better than one with nothing since 2024.
Seed your own Q and A. Anyone can ask a question on your profile and anyone can answer, so if you leave it empty, someone else fills it in. Post and answer these yourself:
- Do you come to me or do I bring the car to you?
- How long does a ceramic coating take, and can I drive it the same day?
- What is the difference between a wash and a full detail?
- Do you take a deposit when I book?
Hours matter more in this trade than owners think. Only 49.9% of listings show Saturday hours and 38% show Sunday, and Saturday is the day the average person looks at their filthy car and decides to do something about it. If you work Saturdays, say so. If you do not, still set real weekday hours rather than leaving them blank like the 36% who do.
Booking link and the website field
Put your booking page in both the website field and the appointment link field. If you take deposits online, this is where that flow starts, and it is the difference between a lead and a booked slot. Shops that route "book now" straight to a phone number lose every customer browsing at 9pm.
If you have no website at all, you are in the 34.3%, and the median listing without one carries 5 reviews against 51 for listings with one. Start with the website essentials guide.
Frequently asked
Will adding more service areas make me rank in more cities? No. Service areas control where Google will show you as eligible, not where you rank. Ranking still keys off your verified address and your overall authority. Listing 40 cities does not help and can look spammy.
Should I put my prices on the profile? Ranges, yes. Buyers filter on price whether or not you give them one, and stating a floor kills the tire-kicker calls that eat your morning.
How long does verification take for a mobile business? Usually a video verification within a week. Have your van, your equipment and something showing the business name ready to film in one continuous take.
